2008Supporting Activities Centres in Gaza and the West Bank 2008
This year, we have already supported a number of activities in the Youth Activity Centres in Gaza and the West Bank. So far this includes:
Gaza Strip:
Al Daraj Camp
- The Women's Programs Centre has established a computer centre where they have held training courses for women, children, and young people.
Nseirat Camp
- Hoping sponsored a Cinema Cultural Club at the local Women’s Centre, which shows films on a range of issues and themes. They are followed by a series of discussion sessions about the films and the production of a monthly magazine addressing the issues raised.
Deir al Balah Camp
- Various activities were held to educate and entertain women and their children. For example first aid courses, food storage advice, and art workshops. Lectures and meetings were also arranged on different aspects of culture.
Al Bureij Camp
- Hoping supported the Women’s Centre by helping them to develop their library and hold workshops, lectures, and competitions for children, women and young people of the camp.
Beit Hanoun and Al Shati’ Women’s Activity Centres
- The centres have shown screenings of educational and documentary films and have organised a series of follow up discussion sessions.
Al Shati’ Cultural Centre
- A summer camp for 80 children was held offering sports and arts activities for 7-12 year olds.
Jabalia Women & Community Empowerment Project- HOPING has supported art and music activities for children as well as loom training for young women in Jabalia
Filasteen el Ghad
- Theatre workshops and games were held for local children.
General Union of Cultural Centres
- Theatre training was offered to young Palestinians who produced a play for their friends and families.
Afkar Society for Development
- HOPING supported theatre workshops and the production of a play about human rights for youth.
Jabalia Free Homeland Society
- the centre established a small children's library and purchased costumes for their dakba dance group.
Rafah Women's Centre
- A variety of activities were held for local children, from drawing, writing, woodcraft and pottery classes to sports competitions and day trips.
Palestine Forum Centre for Society Development
- Workshops, film screenings and discussion groups were offered to young Palestinians
Future Society for Development & Environment
- Using the internet and computers, children were taught about ways to protect the environment. From their own research, they then created a newsletter about the issue.
Jabalia Women's Activity Centre
- Activities such as dakba, drawing, and craft workshops were provided for children in Jabalia camp.
Union of Youth Activity Centres, Gaza
- A HOPING grant assisted the purchase of equipment for the main office.
West Bank
UYAC summer camps
- this summer 18 summer camps were held in refugee camps across the West Bank, involving over 100 children between the ages of 7 and 12 yrs, coordinated by UYAC Headquarters. West Bank, Qalandia Camp
Shu’fat Women’s Centre
- With a HOPING grant, the centre established a library, buying new books, dictionaries and encyclopaedias as well as some essential computer equipment.
Aida YAC
- the Youth Centre in Aida Camp helped build a 10m long key to be placed above the gateway of the camp facing the separation wall. They are hoping to enter this key into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest key. HOPING has supported the work painting the names of all the Palestinian villages lost in 1948 onto the key.
Askar YAC
- The centre has equipped their main hall, and can now hold workshops, meetings, and film screenings there. This grant has included installation of electricity, painting of walls, and furniture.
Arroub YAC
- A grant given to Arroub YAC equipped their activities hall with sports and training equipment so as to give young people the opportunity to participate in a range of sports.
Nour Shams YAC
- 30 tables, 250 chairs, and a host of other equipment have been aquired by the centre in order to hold meetings and workshops iin the centre.
Ein El Sulltan YAC
- A HOPING grant has been given to the Ein El Sultan centre equipping their scouts’ group.
Al Dheisha YAC
- Maintenance and renovation work was carried out in the centre and a grant has enabled then to purchase furniture, administrative and computer equipment, so that activities in the centre can be resumed.
Beit Sahour YAC
- The centre is installing new windows and doors, a kitchen, a sewage system, and electricity.
